Refreshing, thought-provoking, uplifting
By a reader
I systematic this book since we was intrigued by author's row that a multitude overdiagnoses and overmedicates people for carrying traits that could indeed be incited into strengths. One of a hapless formula of this bent is a squashing down of particular differences that make us singular and human. we entirely enjoyed reading this book, and felt that we schooled a satisfactory volume about tellurian nature. we did have some concerns about a book, (4.9
stars) nothing of that detracted from my delight while reading it.
First of all, we found a exam questions to be a bit overly ubiquitous ("are we restless? Have we finished things we regret?" Has anybody not?) and a descriptions of a celebrity forms a bit slight (I know several people who have been strictly diagnosed with ADD who are not during all adventurous.)
Furthermore, while it might a good suspicion to find a pursuit that matches one's talents and traits, it might be equally rewarding to afterwards actively favour a conflicting side of oneself, in sequence to enlarge one's horizons and grow in flexibility and independence.
At a finish of a book, a author mentions that some people have 3 or 4 or 5 high-testing traits, while other people might measure low in all areas. It would be fascinating to examination some-more about ways in that traits combine.
Again, nothing of these thoughts detracted from my delight of this book. Instead, we found myself rereading some sections in sequence to improved know a author's categorical points. The suspicion that what seem like symptoms of a commotion can indeed be strengths is a unequivocally delicious one. we adore a suspicion that we can urge a ability to unequivocally listen to children, to demeanour into their hearts and minds, and assistance them build on their clever points rather than slapping a diagnosis and maybe a drug on them. Similarly, we adults can benefit viewpoint about ourselves, make improved use of a potential, and learn to avoid a problems some-more and some-more successfully by following some of a author's ideas.
All in all, this is a unequivocally useful, enjoyable, and in ways calming book, notwithstanding these concerns; however, since of them we myself take it all with a half pellet of salt. Still, rarely recommended, generally for those who work with immature people.

"Normal People Scare Me"
By Kathleen San Martino
"Normal People Scare Me" is a matter on a shirt we purchased years ago. Besides a apparent meaning, we consider it creates some people who examination it doubt "What is normal?" In his book "Better Than Normal," Dr. Dale Archer says "The box called normal is removing smaller and smaller and smaller any day" and we trust he couldn't be some-more right.
He describes in smooth fact how a attributes that make us opposite can indeed make us exceptional. As a psychiatrist he is informed with abnormality. He valid to me what I've famous all along nonetheless (until now) we was incompetent to find anyone who would acknowledge to it--abnormality is unequivocally rare.
Our multitude is focused on labeling and medicating people. Dr. Archer reviews these lables as 8 celebrity traits that are deliberate disastrous and aberrant disorders in a multitude and describes a core strengths of any trait and how any particular can welcome those core strengths to live an well-developed life. These traits are:
1. Adventurous (ADHD--Attention Deficit Disorder)
2. Perfectionist (OCD--Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)
3. Shy (Social Anxiety Disorder)
4. Anxious (Generalized Anxiety Disorder)
5. Dramatic (Histrionic)
6. Self-Focused (Narcissism)
7. High Energy (Bipolar)
8. Magical (Schizophrenia)
In my opinion, Dr. Archer successfully demonstrated that some of a attributes compared with these personalities are indeed resources and not liabilities. For instance, a chairman who is high on a ADHD continuum has an brave personality. It is personalities like this that concede a explorers of this universe to succeed. Those who are narcissistic tend to be good performers, visionaries, vital leaders, and CEOs. Throughout a book he provides examples of successful people who achieved good things since of their disorders. His goal is for a reader to get in hold with his or her possess traits and strengths. He does acknowledge that their are those who need medical assistance though also provides an instance of someone who is bipolar and is means to live with a slightest involvement possible.
I took all 8 celebrity tests during a finish of a book and was astounded to find myself being top in one trait that would have never crossed my mind had we not examination this book.
So do "Normal People Scare Me"? Yes, they indeed do. To me many people are not normal and those singular people who unequivocally are aren't unequivocally engaging to me.
This book is a screw and one I'll impute to intermittently only to check in to see how we (once referred to by a co-worker as a space cadet) am doing on that scale of normal vs abnormal!
One some-more point. Mental illness is no shouting matter. Although there are a singular few who need medicine, we do trust multitude and a medical contention are too discerning to insert a tag to people. That tag unfortunately comes with a stigma. What Dr. Archer is unequivocally observant is that many of these people are or can be entirely functioning and high-performing adults if they welcome a certain aspects of their traits. Let's not be so discerning to decider though if we do allot a tag let it not come with a stigma.

Better Than Your Normal Pop Psychology Book
By C. CRADDOCK
Dr. Dale Archer has created a book of cocktail psychology that posits a following premise: Most psychological disorders tumble into 8 categories of traits that exist on a continuum. When any of these traits spin super widespread they can benefaction problems, though there are also certain aspects to a traits. Is your potion half dull or half full? When life gives we lemons, make lemonade. And so forth. The 8 traits are:
1. Adventurous (ADHD)
2. Perfectionism (OCD)
3. Shyness (Social Anxiety Disorder)
4. Anxious (Generalized Anxiety Disorder)
5. Dramatic (Histrionic Personality)
6, Self-Focused (Narcissistic Personality)
7. High-Energy (Bi-Polar)
8. Magical (Schizophrenia)
Dr. Archer believes that a mental health investiture has a bent to over medicate, and that while remedy is called for in some cases, in other cases it is improved to welcome these traits, see their certain aspects, and how they make we a singular particular we are. They could make we improved than normal.
There is a section clinging to any trait with anecdotes of people who have a trait and how they have dealt with a problems or managed to spin them into advantages. For instance, a concerned chairman is fact oriented and skeleton for all contingencies. Like a scout, their sign is "Be Prepared." But all a meditative about what could go wrong mostly creates it formidable for these people to tumble asleep. Dramatic personalities make good actors, or hearing lawyers creation shutting arguments. The self-focused, or narcissistic personality, has loads of self certainty and can rebound behind from disaster to try, try again. One of a anecdotes that illustrate this celebrity is Charlie Sheen, who described himself as carrying tiger blood and Adonis DNA. Dr. Archer takes any trait and redefines it in a certain way, though glossing over a pitfalls that poise critical dangers. At a finish of a book there is a array of questionnaires that will assistance a reader weigh where he or she falls on a continuum for any of a 8 traits.
The Bottom Line is that Better Than Normal is improved than your normal cocktail psychology book. It is a cocktail psychology book, though we don't meant that in a irreverent sense, though rather, it is created for a lay person, a normal person, who needs assistance though not indispensably medical attention, therapy, or medication. Dr. Dale Archer has unequivocally strike a aim with his aim to assistance people improved know themselves and a singular traits and talents they were given.
